His original concert compositions are often inspired by his personal experiences throughout his daily life and his travels. Performed by the Shorter University Symphonic Winds, “In the Crater of a Fallen Giant” was John’s first performed piece, and it was influenced by his trip to Crater Lake National Park. The story of the lake’s formation and the breathtaking views inspired a piece that he immediately began working on upon returning home. All of John’s works can be described as cinematic, expressive, captivating, and dynamic. John strives to convey a narrative in all his compositions, no matter the medium, to keep audiences in their seats and wanting more. John grew up in Rome, Georgia, where he found a love for music early on. Both his parents are musicians. His mother was an elementary music teacher, and his father was a multi-instrumentalist. John began learning violin at the age of five and eventually moved to piano at seven. This love for instruments led to his primary instrument, trombone. John had a particular interest in jazz music but also performed with his high school’s wind ensemble, musical pit orchestras, and marching band, as well as performing with the elite drum corps, Carolina Crown from 2009-2013. When he was younger, John was very introverted, and in his own words, would stay in his room, listening to film scores imagining the stories they were conveying. It was this passion that led him to leave band directing and become a composer for the stage and film, TV, and video games.
