Forming in Moss Side, Manchester, from members of Black Star Dub Collective and Manchester's dub organisers Dub Reaktion, Conscious Youth started with the primary intention of being a studio project producing political digital dubs. Feeling inspired by sound system culture and the need to express there discontent with the social situation across the world Conscious Youth began work in the studio. With songs such as 'Onwards and Upwards' (a positive plea for a brighter future), 'Education' (fighting words against the indoctrination of the education system) and the Eastern inspired steppers of 'Knowledge Through Nature' and 'Struggling Dub' getting plays world wide Conscious Youth decided it was time to take their message to the dance. Under the guidance of local legends Nucleus Roots, Conscious Youth are putting their experience as live musicians to good use and preparing a live set featuring live mixing, MC's and musicians from their home turf and farther afield for 2015. The reasoning behind the name is not that we are youths, but the fact that even in 2014 we are still living under the same oppressive establishment that has downtrodden our people since it's incarnation and the youth need a real education outside of this system. The innocence and honesty of a child is taken away as soon as they enter school, you are taught to be a good worker to help maintain capitalism and trade and add a further cog to this endless machine. Taught by the system, for the system. We want to work together in communities based on trust, love and mutual aid, not institutionalised work ethic purely to fund the state when at the same time you can barely afford to put a roof over your head. We should be taught real life needs like growing our own food, learning to talk to people, listen and understand others problems, learn how do deal with anxiety and learn how to work in communities.
