Merle Haggard, Waylon, Cash, Willy, and of course the list goes on. So Uncle Larry did just that. He helped me pick up my first guitar in a little Mom and Pop pawn shop in Temple City California for fifty bucks. Let’s just say my fingers had seen better days. I played that old Yamaha until they bled. It would be about two years later, I discovered putting music to poems. Learning to write and organize words and rhyme, felt good, it felt right. Shortly after writing a half of dozen horrible songs or so looking back on it now, yeah just horrible, I discovered the chicks loved it, especially if I wrote about them. I have been writing for over twenty five years now and I have really gained a true love for writing and my craft. I absolutely love to create a picture and tell the story with my lyrics for the listener. It all begins with a song as the pros say. I spent my fair share of time in music city USA in my younger years and found out that while trying to become this big country superstar who also could write his own songs, realized if the stars in my eyes ever burned out, song writing could be an alternate means of an exciting way to may a decent living within the music field. It has been just that, exciting but also filled with frustration, disappointment and rejection. I was not giving up. My tenacity accompanied with “I will be successful as a songwriter attitude”, would push me all the way to my goal of BMI’S songwriter of the year and being invited to the CMA’s someday. The CMA’s have yet to call me and well, I am still waiting on being nominated for BMI’s songwriter of the year, but the desire to achieve my goals still burns in me. My time spent as an aspiring songwriter has been such a great learning experience and a time to grow and network with some very talented writers and musicians throughout the years, I wouldn’t change a thing.
