Cheers MY WORLD LENS Ever since I can remember I have dreamed of a world where art and design were not a luxury, but a necessity. When all the other kids were doing math, reading or whatever assignments the teacher had planned for the day, I would draw. I would dream and ideate on art all day long. I come from a humble background where art is not a serious occupation. I worked for years doing manual labor. I drove machinery and stacked containers all day long, working in an uninspiring and grueling environment. I made money with my physical body, not my mind. I have a very interesting perspective from which I gather inspiration, greater than this application can tell. My story is one of struggle and of enlightenment and through this lens I am ready to use my experiences to create unique work. FUTURE GOALS First and foremost, I want to create great work. I want an opportunity to speak through my design. It’s difficult to know what the future holds in an industry that is changing so quickly. Mobile, Web, Tattoos, Google Glass Apps? I am interested in many areas, and I want to assess where opportunities exist to contribute great work, whether working at an agency or through entrepreneurial means. What I know is that I have a unique voice, an uncommon background, and I have something to say. I want to say it. STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES My strengths are that I’m down to earth and easy to communicate with, as well as understanding the task at hand. I am also able to work with a team or independently as needed. I adapt easily to new environments, I’m friendly, and have a strong work ethic. A weakness is that I daydream from time to time; sometimes it takes me awhile to come up with ideas. I can also be shy at times. INFLUENCES I’m a big fan of Shepard Fairey. He started out as a street artist and now is a big name in graphic design. Some of my influences are local tattoo artists like Vancort Richards and Thomas Wade, and Chase Tafoya. I’m also influenced by Japanese woodblock art and prints, such as Hokusai, Torii Kiyomasu, and Okumura Masanobu. Major influences are Maurice Sendak; who I met when I was in the second grade. “Draw what you’re going to draw and do it for yourself”, is what Maurice said to me. Banksy—he is just cool; everything he does. I admire Sam Keith, Frank Miller, Todd McFarlane, Neil Gaiman, Yoshitaka Amano, among others. I also like to see what other countries are doing in their street art. I love Wayne White; I grew up watching his work on Pee Wee’s Playhouse, and still enjoy his work to this day.
