I am an African American filmmaker and photographer. I am passionate about using the art of visual storytelling to capture the beauty, diversity, and complexity of the African American experience. However, I am fluid and have a sense of emotional intelligence to work with anyone despite their race sexuality gender preference, etc. My diversity allows me to approach the work with a lived experience to be sensitive to the subject or subjects that are the focus points.
Through my work, I aim to shed light on important social issues, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate the rich cultural heritage and contributions of African Americans. For more than 20 years I've covered documentary and portraiture assignments for a variety of editorial, business and other clients.
I got my start as a staff photographer at daily newspapers, including the York (Pa.) Dispatch/ York Sunday News, Delmarva Newspapers and Landmark Community Newspapers, and have served in the U.S. Army as a combat photographer.
Informed by the punk rock/ DIY approach, my work makes use of simple, clean compositional elements intersecting with lines, light and moment rooted in the documentary/ photojournalism working approach and traditions. My focus is producing strong documentary and portrait work that engages the viewer with a layered and nuanced visual narrative. In the end, it comes down to exceptionally well-done visual storytelling.
