The chairs are attached to the desk in the cabin, the ship is pitching in the violent winds of the roaring 40s, we are 3000 kilometres from Reunion Island and entering the sub-Antarctic waters. 5 weeks of rotation on the Marion Dufresne, an exclusive expedition to the Terres Australes. Since February 2022, this is the second largest marine protected area in the world. Its marine mammal populations are the most diverse and abundant in the Southern Ocean.
The French Southern Territories National Nature Reserve is an autonomous Overseas Territory administered by a Prefet. It is the largest sanctuary in France with 1.66 million km2. The French Southern Territories (TAAF) are the most inaccessible lands on the planet. Occupied but not inhabited, they are home to a few handfuls of scientists, reserve officers, military personnel and "infras" who come to ‘hibernate’ there for a maximum of 13 months at a time. Dedicated to sub-Antarctic research and to our planet's climatic upheavals, these lands at the end of the world are a testing ground, particularly for environmental preservation thanks to drastic biosecurity rules to curb the spread of exogenous species in these unique and fragile ecosystems.
The archipelagos of Kerguelen, Crozet, and islands of Saint-Paul and Amsterdam, discovered 250 years ago this year, are only accessible by boat. The Marion Dufresne, named after the explorer who discovered the Crozet archipelago, supplies these confettis only four times a year with food and men. The ship, unable to dock, is also equipped with a helicopter. We have obtained access to one of the rotations in order to help you discover these little-known Southern Territories, witnesses to the extreme strength and yet extreme fragility of our nature.
Produced by Le Figaro Magazine and the Yves Rocher Foundation, the report was published on June 2, 2022 in Le Figaro Magazine and is on display at the La Gacilly Festival, France since June 1, 2022.…The chairs are attached to the desk in the cabin, the ship is pitching in the violent winds of the roaring 40s, we are 3000 kilometres from Reunion Island and entering the sub-Antarctic waters. 5 weeks of rotation on the Marion Dufresne, an exclusive expedition to the Terres Australes.
