Re-design logo for Japanese garden
What is the project, and what do you want to achieve with it?
Shayna here, marketing manager for the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix. We are an authentic Japanese Garden in Phoenix Arizona. We are currently re-branding (we’ve never really had a brand to begin with) and want to re-design our current logo. It is a ‘shachi’ (mythical fish/lion) from our sister city of Himeji, Japan. The background is crowded with waves and the shachi is too detailed. The colors of light blue and gray are also difficult to distinguish.
We need a logo that is more modern, simple but also stays true to authentic and traditional Japanese aesthetics and design. The Japanese name of our garden is RoHoEn and we would like a logo mark with that kanji as well as a main logo with the shachi. I have some simplified versions and lots and lots of Japanese logo/traditional Japanese design examples for what we are looking for to inspire you. We are searching for a designer who understands Japanese design, asymmetry, wabi-sabi style, minimalism and has a natural/hand drawn touch.
What are the three top priorities for this project?
- Simplify while keeping shachi shape recognizable
- Embody Japanese style design concepts
- Fit with our new branding
Do you have a deadline?
December 31st 2021
Are there reference materials that can be shared to give insight into what is needed?
I have Notion pages of all designs and logos from the Garden from the last 25 years as well as organized Pinterest boards with all of the reference materials you need. Most have been gathered from Japanese websites and will help you get the right feel for the project.
We are not looking for cute, anime style logo art. We are looking for minimal, modern, Japanese traditional style logo art. If you already understand Japanese design concepts and foundational ideas, we would love to talk to you!
