Shortstack Tabletop
The purpose of this website is to serve as a free tool for presenters in online meetings, specifically remote online role-playing games hosted over Zoom, Discord, or similar services.
The idea is this:
The host wishes to “cast” a PDF image of a map to a group of players. But the players should not be able to see the entire map at once. Rather, they should only be able to see the portions of the map which the host reveals using a paintbrush style eraser tool to eliminate the “fog of war” from the parent image.
To achieve this, the PDF image is dragged and “dropped” into a field. This automatically opens up two separate pop-up windows side by side. Both windows have copies of the PDF image. We will call these images One and Two.
One is completely grayed out (opaque). Two is lightly grayed out (translucent). The presenter is only casting window One to Zoom. But the two images are linked, such that by erasing portions of the shading on window Two the presenter exposes portions of Window One a little bit at a time to his audience.
The website will give visitors an option to fill out a form and “log in” to an account. The benefits of this membership are;
The host can “save” their session for later use. Meaning that the linked windows and their exposed sections can be “saved” and reopened later for continuity. In this event, the host can continue erasing portions of the map and saving or reloading at leisure.
The host can invite others into the same session with a copy-pasted invite link. Participants who log in can be granted (or revoked) the ability to use their cursor to “ping” portions of Window One so that other participants can see the points they are drawing attention to and comment. Participants can also be granted the right to “comment” or add notes to the margins of the opaque map in window One. These comments are also savable between sessions.
This is meant to be a very simple and easy-to-use tool. The controls should be intuitive, and I want to avoid having too many tools and options to prevent confusion. It is designed for use WITH a service like Zoom or Discord which allows a host to cast a webpage on their desktop. Visitors should be able to log into their account, quickly drag and drop an image, watch it pop up two windows side by side, engage the erasing tool, and go.
