Full-Stack Developer wanted to join The Whitney Museum of American Art - founded in 1930 by artist and philanthropist Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, and has the most important collection of American art from the twentieth and twenty-first century. Her vision gave birth to the Whitney Museum of American Art, which has championed the most inventive art in the United States for the past 86 years.

The selected freelancer will collaborate with the Senior Web Developer to build and iterate on whitney.org features, repair issues, and perform other maintenance.

They are searching for someone with extensive Ruby on Rails experience, modern frontend development, and an interest in modern and contemporary art. Whitney.org, which is backed by a small crew, powers a variety of products such as the online collection, digital signage, and audio guide experience.

To be successful in this capacity, you must be comfortable traversing all areas of their stack and have excellent communication skills. This position is open to remote work, with a preference for a hybrid of in-person and remote work.

Requirements:

• B.A./B.S. in computer science or equivalent
• 5+ years of professional web development experience, ideally designing full-stack applications and content management systems
• Extensive knowledge of accessible web design, including W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 and Section 508
• Ability to operate autonomously

Required abilities:

• Ruby on Rails
• HTML5, CSS, SASS, and current JavaScript, including frontend frameworks such as React or Vue
• Docker and Docker Compose
• CI/CD pipelines
• Linux server administration

Desired but not required experience:

• Node.js
• BEM methodology
• Knowledge of structured data standards such as JSON-LD and IIIF
• Knowledge of and interest in twentieth and twenty-first century American and contemporary art
