I started out visualizing and storyboarding in house for a couple of ad agencies in London and Hong Kong while illustrating books on the side.
That got me laser focused on finding the key point to any scene, and conveying it convincingly and with emotional appeal.

Then I spent 8 years in Los Angeles freelancing for production companies and more ad agencies working on more commercials, tv shows and films. My lifelong interest in animation started to take hold.
I became efficient and fast, although as time went by I was working remotely more and more as the pace of vehicle traffic on the roads slowed to a crawl.
So now I work entirely remotely from my home in Santa Fe, NM where it is possible to drive faster than a walking pace. This is where I animate, illustrate, create motion graphics, draw storyboards and all sorts of other fun things to my heart's content.

I have 17 years of experience in animation for children tv shows, commercials, and games. I have been absorbed by managing roles in the past 9 years, as Animation Team Lead first and then Head of Animation whilst working for Gamesys. Throughout the time spent at Gamesys, the team I have line managed has grown from a small group of 4 to 30 and it included traditional animators, motion graphic designers, 3d generalists, character designers, digital artists and Sound Designers. With them I have worked mainly directing the animation of games, tv adverts and promotional trailers for the game launches. At times, I have had a more hands on approach when needed, as I am a traditional animator at heart. I often storyboarded the game trailers myself. I love working with people, I love seeing how they take on my direction and what they bring to the table, I have been lucky to work with incredibly talented artists on my journey so far and I am looking forward to what the future will throw at me.

There's always generally an emphasis on vibrancy and cuteness as my favourite artistic direction, although I also work gritty true-crime, film-noir kinds of illustrations for hit multi-million subscriber Youtube channels, and I've also designed podcast art, logo art, game art, and written game lore.
Before this, I used to work for five years for my university as a video producer and editor, working on all stages of production and including motion graphics and special effects. You can see one example of my filming, editing and effects work on the showcase video to the left. Today I still work on video editing on occasion: I work with popular indie groups when making music videos, and also provided splendid 2D handdrawn animation for Youtube channels, music artists, documentaries, and environmentalist initiatives.
Therefore, it's not surprising that my videos have a "music video"-ish sensibility to them.
I always like fueling my inspirations. My biggest sources of creative energy are the 1960s counterculture, the Beatles, psychedelic art, science fiction, high fantasy, the demoscene, and films, video games, comics and music of all kinds.

Joana currently resides in Portugal and has completed her BFA at the Ontario College of Art and Design University, majoring in Drawing and Painting and minoring in Expanded Animation. Joana finished with Distinction, with a Honorable Mention in Integrated Media, and with the Anne Adler Kagan Drawing and Painting Award. Joana has participated in 16 Art Exhibitions around North America and Europe, selected screenings (one of which was at the NFB in Toronto) and a symposium appearance in a Conference regarding the American Synesthesia Association. She created covers of books and magazines in Switzerland (3) and Croatia (1), and received two awards and a scholarship at OCAD University. I'm Surya Nair, and I've been freelancing as an illustrator since 5 years, and for about 12+ children's books/novels over the past 3 years, and I've had the chance to work with a wide range of artistic styles with clients across Europe, North America, and parts of Asia and Africa. Some of my clients and associations include Britannia (UAE) , Warner Bros. Studios, Teacher Created Materials (California, US), The Salvation Army, Bleu Rubis Publishing. I have also worked on merchandise, chat stickers, custom art, logos, etc.
I believe my experience with different art styles over the years would come handy, and make me the perfect choice for illustration gigs of all kinds and genre.
