‘Soul’ is the second EP release from
Manchester duo Hot Beat Repeat and follows their 2012 debut ‘Ease it Up’, which led to local and national recognition.
Described as producing a wall of sound, the band use an array of loop pedals and samplers to layer electronic synths and strings over indie-inspired drums and guitars in a live setting. Heavily-reverbed and harmonised vocals convey a haunting sound described by one review as a commercial Wu Lyf.
In keeping with their tongue-in-cheek name,
Hot Beat Repeat’s music is largely pop-orientated, though each song is written to cover weighty topics from drug addiction in ‘Soul’ to oppression and social uprising in ‘Furore’.
Citing influences old and new, from Marvin Gaye and Paul McCartney to Tom Vek and Foals, the band have spent the best part of two years crafting their sound in their own Manchester Northern Quarter studio. Their recent live dates have seen them support Badly Drawn Boy, play the main stage of Manchester Festival and win Band on the Wall’s new music competition.
‘Soul’ EP was recorded by the band and mixed by Phil Bulleyment (Delphic, Dutch Uncles) at Edwin Street Studios.
