Hello! My name is Rae Donnelly and I live in the beautiful city of Cape Town, South Africa. I studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Cape Town and in later years studied jewelry making and design and garment construction. I began working in theatre and film straight after I completed my studies. Twenty years have passed, and I still enjoy my work so much, no two jobs ever the same. I've dressed a vast range of characters and crowds over the years, from ancient civilizations to everyday contemporary; sci-fi and fantasy; mascots to couture. I’ve worked across theatre, film, TV commercials, music videos, TV mini-series, reality shows, stills styling, editorials, festivals and recently 3D films for VR headsets for immersive technology art installations. Some positive attributes I bring to a project: properly thought out use of colour and texture; grasp of the nature of fabrics and textiles; clear understanding of the ageing and dyeing processes involved in producing believable costumes which are different on each project I work on. I’m enthusiastic, enjoy my work, am approachable, reliable, and honest. I am hard-working, yet quite easy-going and kind. I work well under pressure and keep relatively calm when unexpected challenges occur, as they often do in our industry. I have been fortunate enough to work with a few big Hollywood stars and directors over the years, and I am at ease working with A-listers just as I am with lesser-known actors, and background players. My jobs have been in the UK, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, New Zealand, Mozambique, Kenya, Ghana, Namibia and all-over South Africa. Due to this I have built a strong network of suppliers and rental companies, both locally and internationally. I am familiar with the international as well as local shipping of costumes, fabrics and hired costumes; customs requirements, ATA carnet’s and return regulations. My computer skills are good, and I personally track the costume department’s budget throughout the project. Awards I have won include two SAFTA Golden Horn Awards for Best Costume Designer for a Feature Film for 2012, and again for 2016. I serve as a judge for the South African Film and Television Awards held annually and am mentor previously disadvantaged youth interested in a career in film. In between my costume designing work , I design pet products for my pet apparel range called ‘Poochie’. I am available to work anywhere the work takes me. If you require my services, I will be happy to give your project my very best! I look forward to being of service to you.
