    uniE608 Volcano
As you sail closer to the secluded island shrouded in tropical trees, you see small plumes of smoke in the distance. The inland volcano is beginning to fester. Basking in the salty though refreshing ocean breeze on your skin, you make landfall, hoping to explore the ruins and uncover the secrets embedded within. "An island with a dormant volcano in its center, ancient buildings covered by maroon sands" was the prompt I received as a starting point for another piece. I wanted to get the tropical yet mysterious feeling across and the marimba was the perfect instrument for that with its damper and echoey texture. This was the first piece I've been able to mix with the proper software, further allowing the defining timbres to come through.
    uniE608 8-Bit Port Town
You and your party make it to the far reaches of the metropolis, but instead of more inns and cobble stone walkways, you're met with something you hadn't been told about before in this land. Docks with large ships unloading vast amounts of cargo and merchants haggling to get the best price for goods. The salty sea air hits your nose, and before you have time to react, a group of staunch fellows whiz past you, chasing a few rouges who have stolen their loot. You've entered the port down. This piece began as practice for using distortion plug-ins in Logic and developed a long way to what it is now. I started with a basic melodic line on an organ and rotated different plug ins such as the bit crusher and phase distorter. These gave me the feeling of an old 90s video game and I ran with that notion. Multiple lines that build upon each other make this piece feel as though one is flowing with the brash current of the open sea.
uniE608 Pax Tempesta: Call of the Storm
This is a piece written as the main theme for our party in a Dungeons and Dragons campaign I was involved in (same campaign as the one referred to in Augustine Calmness and Capability). It follows the journey of 6 unlikely allies, venturing across the Sword Coast in order to restore peace to the land. Each instrument (except the timpani) is connected to a character and was used as the main voice in each of their individual works. Thea the warlock is represented by the flute, given her gentle aura and connection to nature. Augustine the rogue is portrayed by the clarinet to emphasize his darker profession. Vondus the cleric and Hyper the fighter are both presented as horns due to their combat expertise, despite their differentiating upbringings in war and gladiator brawls respectively. Opethonimalken stands out as the cello, demonstrating his wild behaviors as a mastermind of explosives. Finally, there is Raeya as the harp, culminating in her magic of divine lightning. All the members bring a unique aspect to the party in terms of personality, backstory, relationships, and motivations. The piece begins by gradually incorporating instruments to show our formation as a group. Once everyone is in, the adventure begins, presenting the main theme depicting heroism and excitement that is passed around. Glimpses of individual effort shimmer as the main theme of everyone’s personal pieces phase in and out as countermelodies to the main phrase. Virtuous deeds and precise spectacles are showcased, from Thea’s clutching yet random surges of Wild Magic to Vondus’s stalwart defenses to protect his allies and Hyper’s bravery riding atop a dragon to get the edge on it while in flight, all character had their stunning moments. The finale culminates in all parts together, sharing the spotlight and carving their way through thick and thin in the name of peace.
    uniE608 Augustine: Calmness and Capability
This is a piece written about a character in a Dungeons and Dragons campaign I was involved in. The name of the character is Augustine Silverheel, a rogue whose heart is shattered by the demise of his close friend and mentor Nilis. Soon thereafter, an evil entity in the Lord of Bones presents Augustine with a deal: revive Nilis as he once was in exchange for a favor at a later date. Darkness weaves its way into the rogue’s heart as he is thrown back and forth between his wants and the wellness of the party. In the end he becomes a puppet for the Lord of Bones, meeting his end in a dramatic yet somber clash against his former allies. Augustine, represented by the clarinet, mimics both the mysterious and swift bassoon (Nilis) as well as the alluring whispers from the Lord of Bones (oboe). Both forces of the rogue’s life are reflected by different rhythmic motives. Nilis has a 2 against 3 figure, marking his stealth and precision as a fellow rogue, while by contrast, the Lord of Bones plays into the melodic yet shrouded twists of the waltz. In the final phrase, the clarinet reverts to the defining rhythm of the bassoon, proving that no matter what treachery he may face, Augustine will never forget the bonds he forged with Nilis.
