Producer II

The Producer II is a hands-on creative role, performing all levels of production tasks in collaboration with the hosts and Supervising Editor. This includes generating story and interview ideas; reporting; editing audio; scoring, conducting research, booking, writing scripts, fact-checking, and editing production material. The ability to collaborate and clearly communicate is required as the Producer II will often be partnered with colleagues, will help with scheduling and planning, and will collaborate across the organization, and act as a mentor and support interns and junior staff. This is a fun and demanding role as an active collaborator on an ambitious team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Regularly research, report, and produce in a creative and rigorous manner, maintaining the highest editorial judgment.
  • Participate in editorial pitching and planning of the show, including episode topic selection, story ideas, and selection/booking of guests/experts.
  • Create original show segments.
  • Produce, write, mix and score episodes and portions of episodes.
  • Work on major, long-term projects, as well as short deadline pieces, sometimes simultaneously.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least three to five years of experience producing on Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, or similar professional digital audio workstations. Pro Tools proficiency preferred.
  • At least three years experience in podcasting or broadcasting.
  • Experience in longform story production.
  • Strong sonic and narrative sensibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently under deadline pressure.
  • Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes.
  • Understanding of journalistic ethics. Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
  • Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, organization and time management skills, and adaptability.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to pull narrative frames out of sometimes big topics and ideas.
  • Problem solving.
  • Ability to give and receive constructive creative feedback.

NPR Pay Range

$102,500—$110,000 USD
