Contract: Freelance, Temporary

Responsibilities include:

  • Covering presidential candidates, issues, events, and other political narratives across the 2024 national landscape.
  • Covering political stories across the wide political spectrum including those about underreported and underrepresented communities and voters.
  • Demonstrate strong objective editorial judgement in helping identify and tell political stories of the day.
  • Covering/shooting political events with video camera/gear and broadcasting them via LiveU technology as needed.
  • Supplying written and videotaped content on our digital and social media platforms.
  • An ability to break news across the political landscape.
  • Assisting the editorial team with research and gathering elements for segments across various CBS News platforms.
  • Assisting the Special Events Unit with research ahead of key political events like debates, conventions, and elections.

Qualifications:

  • Ideally, candidates should have at least 1 year of journalism experience. Prior experience covering politics is a plus.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment, under tight deadlines is critical.
  • Looking for political enthusiast. The ideal candidates should be passionate and knowledgeable about politics from local to presidential campaigns and, elections, campaigns with an eye on helping identify what matters to the voters.
  • Looking for multi-taskers who can balance many responsibilities.
  • Strong communication skills: interpersonal, written and verbal.
  • Must be a self-starter who works well within a team but can stand and produce as an individual contributor.
  • Understanding of newsgathering, broadcast and transmission technology.
  • Strong research skills and familiarity with public and private records databases, such as Lexis Nexis.
  • Looking for aggressive yet supportive journalists who can break news and also work with a larger team on reporting stories.
  • Willing to travel and sometimes with short notice (may include overnight trips).
  • Flexibility with a willingness to work long hours and weekends as the story dictates.
  • Understanding of poll/surveys and political data and trends.
  • Experience in broadcast television is a plus.
  • Experience developing and cultivating sources is necessary. Experience developing political sources is a plus.
  • Must have a valid drivers license and passport, and unrestricted ability to drive/fly.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Hiring Salary Range: $64,000.

The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York City, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
