The Role

Newcastle University are delighted to advertise one of the most exciting opportunities in the North East for a skilled communications professional to join us as Digital Communications Manager for the UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA).

In our journey of growth and with operations already established in Canada, China, Italy, Taiwan, Australia, the post will support NICA and NICA’s sister organization Voice® in their broad range of activities to sustain its mission to become the world’s leading enabler for ageing and longevity innovation and applications.

You will have excellent digital media and writing skills and attention to detail with a proven ability to communicate articulated material clearly, succinctly, and creatively to a range of audiences from the general public to private investors and across a range of communication channels.

You will have an excellent understanding of social media KPI’s, how to maximize reach through data, how to reach targeted audience via solid strategic principles.

You will be proficient on social media metrics software and have experience in managing and growing social media accounts.

You will be people focused, excellent at building relationships with key stakeholders and support a collaborative environment, fostering a culture of trust and mutual respect.

You will be a team player and comfortable working with colleagues across different organisations to ensure NICA is communicated effectively to a diverse range of audiences, internally and externally.

You will be good at multitasking, able to plan and prioritize several communication projects simultaneously.

Familiarity with graphic design tools and basic video editing software is a plus.

A background in Higher Education or ageing and longevity is not essential.

We are interested in your understanding of innovation, and how your skills and experience in delivering creative communications can be used to support the delivery of the NICA strategy.

Key Accountabilities

  • Raise awareness of NICA’s mission and its business focus and values, to national and international stakeholders.
  • Proactively research, develop/write, package, and promote NICA’s stories of projects, innovations, research, studies, opportunities and achievements, public involvement activities and impacts working closely with colleagues to identify topics to promote and then communicating these to a range of audiences via the following channels:
  • NICA Website
  • Voice ® Facebook, Twitter accounts
  • NICA Linkedin, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube
  • NICA and Voice ® PR
  • NICA+ Voice ® This Curious Life magazine/newsletter
  • Proactively use AI LLM tools to identify gaps, develop new ideas, wisely integrate AI based content in future narratives.
  • Take the lead on sourcing, developing, and editing content of the NICA channels as stated above, including, but not limited to, texts, photographs, video, graphics, infographics etc.
  • Work closely with Newcastle University and NGI Press Offices to be the interface to facilitating the inclusion of NICA narratives in the press.
  • Develop content strategies to drive visitors to NICA website and create a plan to monitor and improve user experience and site performance.
  • Undertake regular reviews of the content to ensure it is up to date, correct and fit for purpose.
  • Benchmark, track and report on website and social media analytics for the website and social media accounts as stated above, intelligently utilizing the most advanced analytics software.
  • Ensure messaging is integrated and aligned to wider University communications.
  • Build and nurture highly productive relationships with colleagues across the world where NICA and Voice ® are expanding their presence and with Newcastle University communications communities.
  • Work with colleagues within NICA and Voice ® Management Teams to support event activities by providing communications expertise in this area, including the development of relevant publication materials, promotion of the event and any digital communications needed to promote or run the event.
  • To lead on special projects as they arise within NICA.
  • Any other relevant activities required by the Directors or Managers of NICA.

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering innovative and engaging communications using a variety of appropriate channels and techniques, to a wide variety of audiences, ensuring accessibility of communication to diverse audiences with different needs (e.g. easy read /screen reader accessible)
  • A proven track record in the production of print and digital media, publications and publicity materials
  • Excellent writing skills and attention to detail with a proven ability to produce clear, concise copy for online and offline publication, and to summarize complex material clearly and succinctly for a range of audiences.
  • Advanced IT skills including the use of Microsoft Office suite, in particular Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • High level of competency in researching information using the internet and AI LLMs.

  • Ability to undertake independent research into a topic to inform communications activities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, working on own initiative and in juggling a busy workload, involving the management of multiple tasks.
  • Flexible and adaptable in working with different disciplines and coping with changing and conflicting priorities; with a flexible approach to work, including a willingness to attend and assist with events held in the evening (likely few times in a year) and at weekends (extremely rarely).

Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent.
