General Job Description
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Music, the Associate Principal Keyboardist is the church’s primary pianist and one of two keyboardists/accompanists on staff.
Specific Duties
- Serve as accompanist for both vocal choirs rehearsing on Wednesday evenings - currently Amity (6pm-7:30pm) and Spirit (7:45pm-9:15pm).
- Alternate with the Principal Keyboardist, as appropriate, to accompany Harmony, the choir that currently rehearses on Thursdays from 6:35pm until 7:40pm. This can be coordinated based on the needs of the choir and the availability of both keyboardists.
- Serve as substitute (on basis of comp time/trade or additional compensation) for Principal Keyboardist, as needed and available.
- Serve as keyboardist for each Sunday morning or special performance wherein Amity, Spirit, and Harmony (as needed) sing. This includes preparing up to two solo/instrumental pieces for each occurrence.
- Assist with sectionals, making rehearsal track recordings, retreat workshops, and working with guest musicians and soloists as needed.
- Attend weekly music ministry staff meetings, annual retreats, and other meetings as necessary to support the cohesive planning and facilitation of our holistic music ministry.
- Work with the Director of Music to arrange for qualified substitutes as necessary.
- Program solo material using a pro-diversity and anti-oppressive lens.
- Other related responsibilities as negotiated or assigned.
Qualifications
- Excellent musicianship, proficiency in piano, and an ability to sight read and play from an open score.
- The ability to work collaboratively with the Director of Music, Ministers, other church staff, volunteers, guest musicians, and others.
- A wide and diverse knowledge of repertoire.
- Strong communication ethic and an openness to creative possibility.
- Additional skills may include composing, arranging, proficiency in other instruments (including harpsichord, organ, and celesta) or disciplines, or others.
- Experience in a church or sacred music setting is preferred.
Compensation
This position is classified at .40 FTE salaried, non-exempt. The annual salary is $19,500. Membership in the Association for Unitarian Music Ministries and the American Guild of Organists will be paid by the church. Membership with other professional organizations and other professional development expenses can be negotiated with the Director of Music annually. No additional benefits are available for this position.
