TheWrap is a leading entertainment and media news organization, dedicated to delivering insightful coverage of the entertainment industry. We are currently seeking a highly skilled Magazine Design Director to join our team on a freelance basis for the period from September through February. If you are a talented, experienced designer with a passion for magazine design and production, we want to hear from you!

Position Overview:

The Magazine Design Director will be a key member of our creative team, responsible for designing and production managing our magazine issues from start to finish. We are looking for an experienced designer who is not only a master of graphic design, including typography, photography, and illustrations but also has the ability to consistently meet deadlines while bringing inspiring ideas and a positive attitude to the table. This role reports to and collaborates closely with our Creative Director, contributing to the evolution of the magazine’s look and design.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and production management of all magazine issues, ensuring high-quality output and adherence to deadlines.
  • Design covers and cover spreads for featured layouts
  • Handle all aspects of magazine design, including layout, typography, image selection, and illustration.
  • Collaborate closely with the Creative Director to refine and enhance the magazine’s visual identity.
  • Work closely with the Photo Editor and Awards Editors to bring magazine concepts to life.
  • Create engaging and visually stunning designs that captivate our readers.
  • Create, edit, and keep templates up to date, including style sheets in InDesign
  • Check text styles and spacing on all layouts, ensuring that they are consistent with the templates.
  • Create and keep the digital map/mini-wall up to date
  • Attach and assign articles and layouts in InDesign
  • Basic photo retouch/illustration (color correction/adjust brightness, silo, duotone etc…)
  • Create PDFs to send to the printer using naming conventions set by printer.
  • Create Photo illustrations

Requirements:

  • Must have 5+ years of experience magazine print production design with a strong portfolio showcasing your work.
  • Excellent understanding of typography, photography, and illustration.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • A passion for the entertainment and media industry.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, TypeKit).
  • Familiarity with tools like Slack, Zoom, Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Outlook), and Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs, Slides).
  • Able to design covers and feature story spreads

Salary:

10K - 12K per monthThe pay range above represents the anticipated low and high end of the pay range for this position and may change in the future. Actual pay may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to work location, experience, and performance.
