Job Introduction
News on iPlayer is a pioneering multidisciplinary team, charged with delivering, creating and curating the best of BBC News on iPlayer. The team is expanding – across the UK – to continue to serve and grow audiences consuming news on our streaming platform, both on demand and live.
As a team based within digital development, piloting and testing new formats for SVOD is crucial, while also ensuring we improve the existing programme offer on BBC iPlayer through better curation, iPlayer-first delivery and more. Streaming audiences are constantly evolving, so we must too!
As a Motion Graphic Designer with the News on iPlayer team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the visual identity of our streaming news content. You will be responsible for creating eye-catching key art and developing bespoke motion graphics for our content while aligning with the BBC News brand identity. Sharing design expertise and creative solutions is second nature to you and the audience is always at the core of every decision. You will take huge pride in your work and ensure it meets intended purposes, is usable, accessible and delivers for the broadest possible cross-section of our users. In this dynamic role, you will work both on tight deadlines for daily news content and on longer-term projects focused on brand development and new format creation. Collaboration with the editorial team and contributing your creative input will be a crucial part of your responsibilities.
Main Responsibilities
- Visual Branding: Create distinctive key art for our content, ensuring that the designs are consistent with our brand identity.
- Motion Graphics: Develop bespoke motion graphics for our content, enhancing the overall visual appeal and engagement of our programming.
- User-Centred Design: Prioritise user-centred design principles, ensuring that design solutions are both aesthetically pleasing and easy to understand for our audience.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the editorial team to understand content requirements and contribute your creative input to enhance the visual storytelling of news programming.
- Tight Deadlines: Meet tight deadlines for daily news content, maintaining a high level of creativity and accuracy in your work.
- Long-Term Projects: Engage in longer-term projects focused on brand development and the creation of new formats for our streaming platform.
- Emerging Trends: Stay up-to-date with emerging digital design trends and incorporate innovative design techniques into your work.
- Content Feedback: Share your opinions and ideas on content creation, new format development, and visual improvements to continuously elevate our content quality.
Are you the right candidate?
The Successful Candidate Should Have
- A portfolio or showreel that delivers strong, bold creative solutions on multiple platforms.
- Excellent Visual Design skills, showing strong abilities in type, colour, layout.
- Good Motion graphics skills, and a proven ability to work in a fast paced environment
- Proficiency in industry-standard design software, including Adobe Creative Suite (After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator)
- Good understanding of how audiences consume video on digital platforms, and how to design engaging experiences for these users
- Knowledge of user-centred design principles and the ability to translate them into visually appealing graphics.
- A collaborative attitude, with an ability to adapt to new working practices
- An understanding of the importance of the BBC’s values in accuracy and impartiality.
- Interest in news and current events, with a keen eye for storytelling through visuals
- The ability to deliver different approaches and design styles.
- The ability to talk through your design decisions with a diverse range of people; evidence of successfully collaborating and sharing your ideas.
- The ability to keep pace with latest design trends and technology developments.

Job Impact
- Decision making: Reports to a Senior Designer or Creative Head. Takes assignments from design lead (Senior Designer or Creative Head). Keep track of own workload and makes effective use of time. Keep appropriate people well informed of plans and progress. Chooses best method of initiating, communicating and developing design idea.
- Scope: Finance - No budget responsibility beyond adherence to the BBC expenses policy. Line management - No line management responsibility – may mentor trainees. Actively shares ideas and technical expertise across the team.
