Game Designer is needed in Chicago, United States.

Client: Hero Trainer

Location: Chicago, United States

Contract: Temporary, Contractor, Part Time, Full Time

Who are we?

We are Hero Trainer and we are a people-first company. We are a health ecosystem for gamers - content, games, and a community.

If there is no immediate pay, why do people work here?

The ownership of a project, building a game that truly helps people, and being part of a game studio that is against pay2win and predatory practices. Ultimately, all of this builds your experience, portfolio, and title that can be used in your career. People stay for the culture of respect, learning, and meaningful growth.

Okay, what is the plan for payment?

Revenue share. We will be sharing revenue from different sources i.e sponsored posts for newsletter with 25K subscribers to patreon to shop revenue while we are building our game.

Who is the founder?

My name is Yash Jain and I am the founder and CEO of Hero Trainer. I don’t ask anyone to do anything that I wouldn’t be willing to do myself. I read every application myself and do the first interview always. It is the least I can do to make this process more bearable.

What are we building?

We are building our 2nd game, Ever Flame, the first all-in-one health game. It combines fitness, mindfulness, diet, and sleep into a fun RPG. Think D&D meets Animal Crossing except it gets you healthy. A huge deciding factor will be passion, work ethic, and experience. Our game’s demo is out and we are slowly progressing along. We are looking for help navigating a game design that marries story, behavioral health mechanics, and gameplay for our game.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the creative team to conceptualize and develop innovative game concepts, mechanics, and features.
  • Design, document, and communicate game mechanics, rules, and systems, ensuring clarity and alignment with the project’s vision.
  • Prototype and iterate on gameplay ideas, gathering feedback from stakeholders and conducting playtests to refine and improve the player experience.
  • Collaborate with programmers to implement game mechanics using scripting languages or visual scripting tools.
  • Conduct Playtesting with QA.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to the development team regarding gameplay mechanics, user experience, and game balance.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a Game Designer or a strong portfolio showcasing your design skills and contributions to completed games or projects.
  • Understanding of game monetization models and the ability to design engaging gameplay loops and progression systems that do not rely on pay2win or predatory practices i.e gacha/loot boxes.
  • Familiarity with user interface design principles and practices.
  • Experience with game analytics and the ability to use data to inform design decisions.
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and a passion for delivering high-quality games.
