Job Description
The New York Times audio team is seeking a production assistant to work across current shows and products in the Newsroom and Opinion Audio portfolio. This is a part time, temporary assignment one day a week. The production assistant will help operate our state-of-the-art AoIP studios, outfit content teams with recording equipment, provide support for hosts, show producers and editors, as well as New York Times reporters and contributors. They will also play a role in the ongoing development of audio best-practices in collaboration with the audio engineering team.
Working closely with the Production Manager, this role will focus on two key areas:
- Providing in-studio and remote session support across our studios in New York and DC
- Inventory management and gear deployment for home and field recordings across our portfolio
This position is based in New York City and will be expected to work on-site.
Responsibilities
- Act as first line of defense in troubleshooting studio and Pro Tools workflow issues
- Assist staff in studio procedures, Pro Tools operation, and field recording best practices
- Facilitate studio recordings on behalf of remote staff
- Maintain studio cleanliness, atmosphere, and organization
- Partner with Production Manager as additional on-site contact for vendors and contractors, and coordinate deliveries across various teams
- Assist Production Manager in inventory management and equipment deployment
Basic Qualifications
- 1-3 years of experience as an audio engineer (or equivalent position) required – podcast or broadcast environment preferred
- Believes in the New York Times’ mission and is dedicated to being part of our innovation and growth
- Able to uphold the existing editorial standards of The Times
- Knowledge of Pro Tools, computer networking, field equipment, and studio signal flow
- Ability to quickly, calmly and creatively troubleshoot complex issues under pressure
- Excellent attention to detail, with good organization and time management skills
- Proficiency with Apple computers
- Knowledge of different VoIP softwares such as Google Hangouts, Zoom, and Riverside
The annual pay salary for this role is between $60,000.00 and $65,000.00.
