Job Description:

The Talent Acquisition department hires qualified candidates to fill positions which contribute to the overall strategic success of Howard University. Hiring staff “for fit” makes significant contributions to Howard University’s overall mission.

Primarily responsible for producing video stories about DC’s unique and intriguing people and places for broadcast and digital platforms. Strong, engaging, and creative short-form and long-form storytelling skills are mandatory. Must always maintain factual accuracy and uphold the highest principles of editorial integrity. Stories will be featured in a multi-platform series about the people and places of DC. On-camera work, within stories, as well as show editing, is a possibility.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or television production, or related field
  • Three years relevant experience or equivalent combination of seven relevant training and experience
  • Production experience required, and supervisory experience is highly desired

Nature and Scope:

Internal contacts include University administration and Trustees, faculty, staff, and students of the University. External contacts include celebrities, notable historians, and artists, scientists, local and National opinion leaders and news makers.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Manages and directs production crew on location. Designs and manages assigned productions in the studio.
  • Work as field producer: Proactively research and develop story ideas. Produce approved ideas in a manner that results in compelling, creative, informative, engaging, and in-depth stories.
  • Responsibilities include production planning, conducting interviews, field and studio producing, scripting, narrating/voicing stories, supervision of editing, and meeting all deadlines.
  • Produces television programs; conducts interviews; obtains rights and clearances; manages talent; edits and finalizes programs.
  • Produce creative content for WHUT project websites and related social media sites.
  • Actively engage with diverse communities throughout DC: e.g. as sources for stories.
  • Coordinate with Sr. Production Team to, schedule, and oversee the work of in-house production (studio, field crews, graphics, editing, DVD authoring, etc.) as necessary for assigned stories.
  • Supervises production support staff, administrative interns, and students.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Core Competencies:

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and trends of television program production, their concepts, methodology, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of the practices and conventions of the television industry.
  • Knowledge of public television standards protocols and practices.
  • Ability to formulate broadcast programming concepts and to plan, develop, and implement live and/or pre-recorded television programs.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative with regard to complex technical and program functions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of television production techniques. Skill and organizing resources establishing priorities.
  • Creative, engaging, and clear writing/scripting for broadcast, web, and social media audiences. Ability to tell compelling stories in as little as 5 minutes - or as long as 10 minutes, as the story warrants.
  • Demonstrated broadcast writing skills.
  • Ability to use words, nat sound, video, and graphics for creative, thorough, and memorable stories.
  • Ability to use good judgment, make sound decisions, and behave with tact, decorum, and diplomacy.
  • Proactive, self-directed but collaborative work style. Must actively pitch and then act on approved ideas rather than waiting for assignments to be made.
  • Ability to adapt to technological changes within the workplace and industry.
  • Good problem-solving skills and work ethic.
  • Ability to promote and maintain effective and harmonious work relations with staff, faculty, students, University officials, industry officials, community organizations, and the public.
