Job Description
The Learning Designer (LD) applies knowledge of learning science and instructional design models to assist faculty in the design of online and blended courses. This position provides ad-hoc consultation and support; designs and delivers faculty workshops; and oversees the work of student assistants, interns, and part-time personnel. The LD collaborates with a team of peer learning designers, instructional technologists, accessibility specialists, and content editors to design and develop high-quality learning experiences for NU School of Professional Studies (SPS) students.
Specific Responsibilities
- Collaborate with staff on the Distance Learning team in the School of Professional Studies (SPS) and other stakeholders at the University to design, develop, and support high-quality online and blended courses.
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders to ensure a high degree of understanding and transparency of the online course design process.
- Support faculty with the integration of learning technologies in their instruction.
- Ensure that instructional material is ADA compliant.
- Leverage open educational resources.
- Review existing online courses to identify and suggest design revisions when courses are scheduled for revision.
- Design and deliver faculty development workshops.
- Provide ad hoc consulting, in-person and virtually, to faculty.
- Remain current with research and trends in learning science, learning design practice, and learning technologies.
- Represent SPS Distance Learning at conferences and professional development events.
- Supervise student assistants, interns, and part-time personnel, as needed.
Requirements
- A master’s degree in instructional design or learning science, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and comparable skills. Master’s students who will be completing their program are encouraged to apply.
- At least three years of experience designing completely online, pedagogically aligned courses in a higher education context.
- Strong and applicable experience with project management.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to be a team player who can give and receive feedback to peers.
- Experience and adeptness with learning technology platforms and tools.
- Strong analytical skills to process complex information and translate, and incorporate the information into effective, engaging course designs.
- Experience with best practices for making learning accessible to students, especially with Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
- Excellent attention to detail, especially in the course design process including course pacing/flow of content.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. or Ed.D. in instructional design, learning science, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and comparable skills.
- Four+ years of experience working with faculty in a higher education environment to design courses in online and blended formats.
- Online teaching experience in a higher education environment.
- Experience supporting a learning management system. Knowledge of Canvas is preferred.

- Target hiring range for this position will be between $68,000 - $73,000 per year.
