Report Summary of CannotLunch?!
Introduction
The project *CannotLunch?!* by Team AAAH!!! addresses a gap in Singapore’s digital literacy education. While secondary school students gain technical skills through the National Digital Literacy Programme (NDLP), many lack awareness of web accessibility and inclusivity. This project introduces empathy education early, encouraging students to adopt inclusive design practices and build a more inclusive digital future.
Problem Statement
Future leaders may be technically skilled yet unequipped with empathy to design accessible products. Under the EdTech Masterplan 2030, strengthening digital literacy is a national priority. *CannotLunch?!* embeds experiential learning into existing schedules, making accessibility education natural rather than forced.
Opportunity Statement
The challenge is: *How might we help students recognise invisible barriers in digital platforms so they become empathetic and digitally aware of accessibility needs?*
The project focuses on situational disabilities — temporary impairments like difficulty seeing a screen in bright sunlight. Though often overlooked, these barriers accumulate into frustration. By simulating them, students experience firsthand the discomfort of inaccessible design.
The Lunch Experience
An immersive lunch for Secondary 1–3 students unfolds in three stages:
Stage 1: Introduction
Students receive character cards assigning situational disabilities, framing the challenges ahead.
Stage 2: Interaction
They browse menus with overlapping, low‑contrast text and place orders online while navigating impairments. Food arrives in bento boxes with disruptions such as pop‑up ads and loud audio, simulating inaccessible environments.
Stage 3: Reflection
Facilitators play a video and guide students to connect their discomfort with real‑life scenarios, reinforcing empathy and accessibility awareness.
Conclusion
Embedding accessibility into the curriculum makes it collective and natural. Experiencing barriers together teaches that web accessibility is a shared responsibility. Introducing empathy education early ensures future leaders grow into inclusive decision‑makers.
Ultimately, *CannotLunch?!* is envisioned as a scalable empathy‑driven brand that transforms ordinary environments into immersive learning experiences. Its group‑dynamic setting could even be downsized into a multilingual toolkit, purchased and shared worldwide, enabling tourists and communities to experience empathy education through mealtime interactions. This vision reinforces the project’s foundation in storytelling and its multi‑dimensional method of connecting people.
*CannotLunch?! is more than a single intervention — it is a framework for embedding empathy into everyday life, bridging awareness and action, and inspiring a future where inclusivity is essential.*
