The Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS) and Essential Package of Health Services (EPHS) projects in Badghis province aim to ensure access to quality primary and secondary healthcare services, particularly for vulnerable populations, including women, children, and marginalized communities. These programs are aligned with Afghanistan’s national health strategy and focus on improving health outcomes through a structured network of health facilities, including health posts, comprehensive health centers, and district hospitals.
As the Environmental, Social, Health, and Safety (ESHS) Manager, my role is to ensure that all project activities comply with environmental regulations, social safeguards, and occupational health and safety standards, thereby minimizing risks to staff, beneficiaries, and the surrounding communities. Key responsibilities include:
Conduct environmental risk assessments before initiating construction or rehabilitation of health facilities.
Ensure safe disposal of medical waste, including sharps, contaminated materials, and placentas, following WHO-recommended protocols.
Monitor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) systems, including safe water supply and sanitation facilities, to prevent contamination and infection.
Implement pollution prevention measures, dust and noise control during construction, and safe handling of chemicals and medicines.
Facilitate community engagement to ensure the acceptance and sustainability of health services.
Monitor inclusivity, ensuring access for women, children, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable populations.
Implement grievance redress mechanisms (GRM) to address complaints from staff, patients, and local communities promptly.
Ensure gender-sensitive and culturally appropriate interventions during project execution.
Develop and enforce occupational health and safety (OHS) protocols for project staff, including PPE use, safe work procedures, and emergency response.
Conduct regular staff training on infection prevention and control (IPC), handling of hazardous materials, and workplace safety.
Monitor compliance with national and WHO health guidelines, particularly in operating health centers, vaccination campaigns, and maternal and child health services.
