I have been producing music professionally for 10+ years. I started playing the guitar by ear at 12 years old. Within a month I was tuning by harmonics. Today I can play keyboard/piano, bass, guitar, and the drums live…. Completely by ear. When I first started learning how to make beats, I went out of my way to NOT learn any theory. Why? Because everyone I knew who knew how to read sheet music… well, their beats and music they produced was trash. Terrible sound choices, basic loops, two dimensional trash. Well… eventually I got their anyways. The few chords my dad showed me on the acoustic, and that basic ass Nirvana tablature must have stuck with me. Lol. Now I can tune a piano by ear… it’s a pain in the ass but I had to help my cousin with his upright and let’s just say he doesn’t have the ear that I do. Still to this day I really don’t give a fuck what the notes are called, but I can play a diminished or dominant seventh chord 🤣.
