Chris Cheung is a film composer, arranger and pianist from Hong Kong. With a hybrid background of classical and contemporary music, his works have spanned from traditional instrumentations to experimental electronic soundscapes. After graduating from Berklee College of Music with a Bachelor of Music in Film Scoring and Professional Music (Concentrate in Jazz Piano Performance), he has since been involved in a diverse range of projects both locally and internationally. His most recent endeavor is the score for It Remains, a highly anticipated debut feature from Hong Kong/LA-based director Kelvin Shum, starring Anson Lo, Summer Chan, Tommy Chu Pak Hong, David Chiang Da-wei, Angela Yuen etc. The score received critical acclaim and was praised for its contribution in building the suspenseful soundscape for the film, notably for its unconventional blend of ethnic instruments like Didgeridoo, Fujara, with processed vocal textures, and a wide array of instrumental and synthesized sounds utilizing extended techniques. He was also the music designer for Garden of Repose, an innovative and cross-disciplinary program at the 52nd Hong Kong Arts Festival that fused live performance (by local choir NOEMA), installation, lighting design etc. in combination with immersive audio. He has also provided additional music for Taiwanese feature film Reclaim (2021, starring Nina Paw, Johnny Kou, Ko Chia-Yen), assisting the recording of the score performed by the Capellen Orchestra in Czech Republic. The film premiered at the 2020 Golden Horse Film Festival, Taiwan. As the music director, he was commissioned to write a live soundtrack to Rimini-Protokoll: 100% Hong Kong produced by the renowned German experimental theater company.
