Laura Hudock is an Emmy Award–winning Director of Photography whose work spans documentary and scripted film and television. She is known for crafting emotionally resonant, cinematic images that illuminate both intimate human moments and larger social and political narratives. Whether documenting real-world events or shaping fictional worlds, her visual approach centers empathy, authenticity, and storytelling with impact.
Laura began her career as a camera operator on Emmy-winning and critically acclaimed series including Westworld (HBO) and City on a Hill (Showtime), where she developed a strong foundation in cinematic storytelling. As a Director of Photography, her scripted credits include American Rust (Showtime), Milkshake Girls, and the music video Wasted Days for Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp. Her documentary work has taken her across more than 50 countries, filming in environments ranging from the jungles of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the mountains of Afghanistan.
Her documentary projects include the Emmy-nominated series Woman, hosted by Gloria Steinem, which examined global women’s rights issues, as well as Ascending Afghanistan, documenting the country’s first women’s mountain climbing team. Laura’s work on VICE (HBO) and Girls State (Apple TV)—for which she won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography—demonstrates her ability to translate complex social and political themes into visually compelling narratives. She served as Director of Photography on the first three seasons of The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth (Showtime), chronicling U.S. presidential elections and the evolving political landscape. Additional projects include Invisible Nation, filmed in Taiwan, and King of K-Pop (Amazon), shot in South Korea. She has also collaborated with Academy Award–nominated director Matthew Heineman on American Symphony and The Boy from Medellín.
In addition to film and television, Laura has shot documentary campaigns for major global brands, including Johnson & Johnson, Target, and Mastercard, capturing stories centered on resilience, accessibility, and social impact across Africa and beyond.
Laura is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and the BBC Director’s Training Program in London. Based in Brooklyn, she continues to work internationally, bringing a global perspective shaped by extensive travel and deep cultural engagement.
