Theme/Focus: The book celebrates Black hair in all its beauty, versatility, and cultural significance.
Illustration Style: I used warm, playful, and child-friendly illustration style—bright colors, soft textures, and expressive characters that capture joy and confidence.
Target Audience: Children, especially within the picture book age group (roughly 3–10 years).
Representation: The book highlights diverse Black hairstyles—braids, puffs, twists, afros, cornrows, and more—presented in fun, imaginative ways that children can relate to.
Role & Contribution
Illustrator: I handled the entire illustration process for the book.
Art Direction Choices:
Characters were designed to be relatable, vibrant, and empowering.
Hairstyles were illustrated with attention to detail and authenticity, while still keeping a playful, picture-book vibe.
I balanced realistic hair textures with whimsical storytelling elements.
Deliverables: Completed the full set of illustrations (cover + interior spreads).
