Much of the world’s wealth announces itself through architectural spectacle, social media visibility, and luxury as a performance.
Singapore is one such example. Figures like Kim Lim, the billionaire heiress and daughter of the owner of the Spanish La Liga club, Valencia, regularly document lives of extreme privilege on Instagram, sometimes framed through the language of philanthropy.
At the far end of the same spectrum sits Dubai, where wealth is neither subtle nor self-effacing. No examples are required here.

There, the excess is overt, aggressive, and immediately legible; you know at once that you are among the ultra-rich.

Elsewhere, among the wealthy of Switzerland, the United States, or the international elite who frequent London’s most exclusive venues, this behavior appears relatively restrained, but still performative. While they may not resemble Instagram-era heirs or oil-state magnates, their affluence is generally visible and often deliberately signaled.

By contrast, South Africa’s wealthy remain muted, avoiding public markers of status to such an extent that, without knowing what to look for, one might assume they do not exist.
