paper Behind the Scenes: Filming the Roti Man

How was the documentary about Malaysia’s roti men filmed?

In this behind-the-scenes video, you will see some insights of the DocuSphere crew during the production of Roti Men of Malaysia: A Tradition in Young Hands. From early morning setups to filming inside Haja’s small rented room, this video shows how we captured the story of a disappearing street trade.

Haja is one of the youngest “roti men” in Petaling Jaya — motorbike vendors who sell bread and snacks in Malaysian neighbourhoods every day.

paper The Roti Men of Malaysia | Bread Sellers on Motorbikes | Vanishing Trades Ep.1

Every morning in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, the sound of a motorbike horn signals something familiar — the arrival of the roti man, a travelling bread seller.

For decades, these vendors delivered bread and snacks directly to homes across the country. Today, their numbers are declining as supermarkets and convenience stores replace a once common street trade.

This film follows Haja, a 23-year-old migrant from Tamil Nadu, India. Despite holding two degrees in Computer Science, he struggled to find stable work back home and moved to Malaysia in search of opportunity. Now he rides up to 80 kilometres a day, delivering bread from his motorbike and serving the neighbourhoods that still rely on the roti man.

A quiet portrait of a disappearing trade — and the people keeping it alive.
