paper The Fairies, Flowers, & Fairy Tales

The Fairies, Flowers, & Fairy Tales is a comic duology of fairy tales pulled from Hans Christian Andersen’s collection. Both stories were written in the same decade of the 1830s, taking place in Denmark. The Rose Elf and Little Ida’s Flowers are two lesser-known stories from Andersen, so adapting them into this comic was a labor of love! Keeping it old school, the comic is inked traditionally with dip pens, and bringing a touch of modernity, the inks were scanned and colored digitally, creating the ultimate marriage between traditional and digital art.
The Rose Elf follows a small fairy that lives in a rose as he witnesses a couple say goodbye, while trying to get home. Tragedy soon befalls the couple when the young man doesn’t return from a trip.
Little Ida’s Flowers is a story of a young girl’s flowers wilting and why they have wilted. A student tells fantastical stories of flowers coming alive and dancing in grand balls in castle halls. Believing the stories, Ida goes to bed expecting the flowers to have a ball in the study.
