I had a fabulous education, with both a BA in Communications and a MA in Journalism from Northwestern University. I also credit that wonderful bastion of knowledge for matching me with my now husband of more than 35 years. My career has two acts. Act One, which was decades ago, was as a successful public relations professional. It was highlighted by four years with Edelman Worldwide in Chicago as a Senior Account Executive on their sports marketing team working for brands that included G. Heilman Brewing Company and L.P.G.A. I then relocated to San Francisco where I worked for George Lucas’ gaming company, LucasArts Entertainment as its Public Relations Director. I left that position after six years to focus on family and my newly adopted twin daughters from Romania. Act Two of my career began after my diagnosis with epilepsy in New York City and time spent volunteering with hospitalized epilepsy patients. My patients spoke to me at length about all the things they’d given up because of their disability — their educations, their careers, their relationships. Essentially their independence. I became determined to do what I could to change their mindset from one of “I can’t” to one of “I can’t.” It was with this goal that I created Epilectra — a superhero with epilepsy who transforms her disability into a SUPERability to go into the world and accomplish amazing things. Epilectra became the protagonist in my graphic novel of the same name, EPILECTRA. She leads a team of superheroes with various invisible disabilities they turn into superabilities, and together they’re known as Team SEEZ (for Support & Empower Everyone Zealously). My superheroes all have human personas, and they struggle with their disabilities. But ultimately they learn that they can choose to become stronger, more insightful, and creative people because “disability” is part of what makes them who they are. The media frenzy over Epilectra Book 1 is calming down, and today I fill my time keeping her vibrant on social media, pondering how I might be able to launch Epilectra Book 2 (which is written, but not yet illustrated, and doesn’t have a publisher), taking art classes, and reading.
