    Project Overview

    La chiamavano Armata Pirata is an independent documentary following the football team St Ambroeus FC, founded by migrants and asylum seekers, and its supporters group Armata Pirata 161.

    Born together with the team, the supporters’ collective combines their passion for football with strong values of anti-fascism, anti-sexism and social activism, reclaiming the idea of popular football as a space for community, identity and resistance.

    Through chants, flags, choreographies and away matches, the film explores an alternative football culture that stands in opposition to the modern, highly commercialized game.

    Filmed using only a smartphone and a microphone, director Giacomo Bolzoni follows the supporters throughout the entire 2023–2024 season, documenting their presence in stadium stands, neighbourhoods and social spaces across the city.

    The result is an unconventional and intimate portrait of a community deliberately distant from mainstream media narratives.
