Born in Valsesia, Piedmont, Gigi Giustiniani moved to Milan in 2001 where he
studied Cultural Heritage at the Università Statale and then trained in documentary
filmmaking at the Civiche Scuole di Cinema, Televisione e Nuovi Media. His first film,
La casa del Drago (2005), was shot with inmates of the Montelupo Fiorentino
forensic psychiatric hospital. Since then he has worked as director, cinematographer
and editor across Italy, Brazil, Ethiopia, Benin and Mauritania, often in collaboration
with NGOs.
Alongside filmmaking, Gigi has produced sound works for various contexts:
Bibliofonie, a sound project developed in a workshop with psychiatric patients; I
nomi, le vostre voci for MEMI Fest; and CampBus for Corriere della Sera. He has
always handled sound design and original scores for his own films.
Gigi Giustiniani has always played music — he began studying violin at age four. In
2021 he launched Diereva, an electronic music project focused on organic
downtempo: a genre built from analogue synthesis, field recordings and live
improvisation. Diereva developed first through live performance — at venues such as
Beate Uwe in Berlin and La Nature Festival in Belgium — and has since grown into
an active studio practice, with releases on independent labels across Russia,
Mexico, Turkey, Ukraine, Portugal, Germany and Spain.
