“Binibini sa Mahal na Araw” is a Capstone Narrative Film that tells the story of a mermaid from the Bislak River in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte. As time passes, fewer people remember this local legend. The story is often only talked about during certain events, and even then, the details change from one person to another. This film hopes to preserve the tale by creating one shared version that Bacarreños can pass on to future generations.
The film is inspired on true stories and personal experiences shared by people who still remember the legend. The researcher used interviews and recommendations to find these people, since only a few still know the tale. The story is set during Holy Week and shows a mix of faith and mystery. It uses quiet scenes, religious symbols, and images of nature to build a dark and haunting mood. Water plays a big role in the film—it represents both life and death. The mermaid becomes a symbol of hidden truths and the past that people try to forget.
Through this film, the project aims to keep the folklore alive and show how modern media, like film, can help protect and share our culture.
