Melbourne-based cinematographer James Bentley has been working on narrative films and commercials since 2014. After graduating from Swinburne University with a Bachelor's in Film and TV in 2013, James emerged with an organic approach to composition and lighting. Additional work as a camera assistant and rental technician gave James a high level of technical camera proficiency. Previously his work can be described as naturalistic and emotive, often opting for a handheld look to feel connected and a part of the scene. He is also well known for his collaborative nature and ability to work closely with directors and actors. James shot a short film called “Friends of Mine” that was selected in both St Kilda and Cannes Shorts 2022 film festivals. Recently shooting another short film "Apartment 42" which was selected for the 34th Flickerfest International Short Film Festival. He is now working on several short films, social media and commercial projects, and seeking to expand and grow his skills further. Thriving in a collaborative team, James looks forward to working with new and emerging filmmakers.
