The series begins in late fall 1936, where down-on-his-luck salesman TEDDY WELLES makes his way through the winding city, selling his wares. Just another typical day, but he comes to notice the mysterious Flashes plaguing his mind have gotten worse.

Commiserating about his plight with his on-again/off-again girl ELOISE does little to calm his nerves. What does he see in these Flashes, and why can’t he get the image of a door out of his head? He needs answers, and discreetly each night, he goes out to find them…

In 1942, a melancholic teen pianist, haunted by her family’s malicious past, escapes to her estranged Aunt and Uncle’s secluded inn. Upon arrival, a sinister presence begins to plague her every move.

1933. Young MADELINE EVANS creeps through the dense wood, adjacent to her aunt and uncle’s Inn, The O’Brien. She has overheard morbid cries in a clearing, but finds only a rusted knife amongst the dead leaves.

She returns to the Inn, once a stopover in the 1880s through the Sierra Nevada mountains on the way to San Francisco. The glory days have since been replaced by time and decay. Despite the pleas to her haughty, aristocratic mother MARY and classical pianist STEPHEN that something is out there, she is ignored. AUNT GENA and UNCLE SAMUEL are no less receptive.

As a family photo is captured, Samuel witnesses a misty apparition appear from the wood and fixate on young Madeline. Distraught, Samuel understands what that entails…

Several years later, the world is at war, and 17-year-old Madeline frantically packs her belongings in her upscale San Francisco home. Something is troubling her. After her visit all those years ago, she is returning to The O’Brien for an extended stay.

Under the cover of night, Mary and Stephen whisk Madeline to The O’Brien, where they are warmly greeted by a hermetic Gena and Samuel. Upon their arrival, Madeline grasps a young woman in an upstairs window.

While Samuel proudly shows off the place, we learn that Gena toils away at the small hospital in town as a nurse, while Samuel has poured his love and care into maintaining the grandeur of the Inn.

Apprehensive, Madeline explores the corridor, finds empty rooms and a single locked door. Inside, she hears a piano playing and footsteps. Her doubts continue to mount –

To avoid scandal to the family name, Mary and Stephen have procured Gena’s expertise as she also moonlights in assisting the elderly DR. FIELDS to perform late-night, illegal abortions for troubled girls.

That first night, Madeline reminisces about her final meeting with her impoverished beau NORMAN before he was to be shipped off to war. They share a passionate night, and only then do we learn –

Madeline is pregnant.

A presence leads Madeline to the clearing in the woods, where disembodied voices taunt her into –

While the vision proves to be a lucid dream, Madeline, at first unmoved by the decision to abort her own child, begins to reconcile with her morality and the measures a parent will go to protect their child.
