This project was a close to home project: my wife is a teacher and to inspire one of her students to continue writing poetry they embarked on a project where they would each write a haiku on one subject. As the project progressed I was homeschooling our four year old during the lockdown and always kept a little 4" x 3" sketchbook next to me. So I doodled little teacher student sketches not even considering they would be used for anything at all. My wife picked up the sketchbook one day and decided that those sketches would be perfect for the book she and her student were working on. One thing led to another and I ended up building them a book which was self published later on Amazon.

Mountain Fly: Pinecone Midnight--Pencil Illustration
The Author loved the idea of the Fly in her story sitting on a pinecone and singing with the campers around the campfire. Originally I just roughed the idea out in a simple sketch and later I polished up the sketch and gave it to the author as a Mountain Fly memento for her birthday.

It's the end of a long night and our adventurous Fly needs to find a safe place to slumber and, wouldn't you know it--the authors van is parked nearby! The van, Guitar and chairs will make more appearances in the book establishing continuity and pattern for young minds! The cool and warm colors hinting at the campfire and the moon are meant to give the viewer a sense of transition which is what our Fly is about to unwittingly do.

The patterns on the leaves continue in some form throughout the book.
