I’m Joanna Scott, a freelance artist and illustrator with more than 25 years of experience in commercial art and around 20 years working in public art and participation. I am versatile across a wide range of mediums and disciplines, with core strengths in drawing and painting, project initiation, ideas generation, collaboration, and delivering projects from concept to completion. I have a natural talent for inspiring others in their artistic endeavours, helping to catalyse learning and growth with originality and enthusiasm.
My practice spans installations, site-specific, interactive and 3D works, heritage and social projects, oral histories, gallery and performance events, and creative direction for arts charities. I work across illustration, publishing, and public engagement, collaborating with museums, libraries and theatre companies. Clients have included SPID Theatre Company, Hertford and Watford Museums, ITV, Paddington Bear & Co, and many community projects.

January 1, 2013 - January 1, 2015I've worked with Joanna on two children's brands, Paddington Bear and The World of Dinosaur Roar. Her illustration styles were ideal for both briefs. She brought to life the pose ideas for Paddington Bear in an accurate and charming way. And her skill at line art was ideal for translating the CGI Dinosaur poses into a more accessible format for a series of activity videos. Always on time and lovely to work with.

January 1, 2017 - PresentI wanted to create a children’s picture book in memory of our son, Tom, and to support the Down’s Syndrome Association. I had written a manuscript, but my own drawings were never going to be to a high enough standard for the high quality book that I wanted to produce and that everyone could be proud of. I ran a competition amongst a number of professional illustrators, providing them with the manuscript and some of my own scribbles, and asked them to provide their interpretation of the main character, Tom Mouse, in a few of the scenes. I then sought views from friends and colleagues on the inputs I received. I was not entirely sure what I was after, but seeing Joanna’s submission made it so clear, she had brought the Tom Mouse character to life.
Joanna is a wonderfully creative illustrator, very engaging, great fun, and a delight to work with. I wanted to be able to work with an illustrator, not to just hand over a manuscript. Joanna helped to develop a highly effective working partnership, introducing me to other creative professionals. She has brought ideas and proposed changes to the characters and to the story which has greatly enhanced the book. Joanna has also provided the drawings and input to support the development of a toy Tom Mouse - the first wave of 300 mice will shortly be on their way from China to support the sales of the picture book, You Can Do It Tom Mouse!
I will always be a great advocate of Joanna and her work. A highly talented illustrator, able to work with the customer to help shape and create a wonderful product. I am waiting in the wings with the manuscript for the next Tom Mouse book!
