He has written about the arts in over 35 publications, including being a drama and music critic for The Sydney Morning Herald since 1993. In 2017 he won the inaugural Arts Journalism Award at the Walkleys, the nation’s pre-eminent awards for journalism. His plays include Guilt (developed with Steven Berkoff) and The Last Drop, both of which premiered in the US (produced by Scena Theatre), and The Phantom of the Soap Opera, a play for teenagers. He wrote the libretto for the oratorio Voices (composed my Mark Isaacs), which was presented by 1,000 performers in the Concert Hall of Sydney Opera House with John directing.
