    Loss

    Short poem created for a nonfiction writing course

    Loss is a chasm, decades long and centuries deep.
    It is a gash splitting apart your earth, cutting through the core; severing what was and what will be into two hemispheres distanced like two continents by an abysmal sea.
    It is the tentative smoothing of edges, the bridging of margins with feeble wooden boards, and the knowledge that they will inevitably cave and collapse.
    Burdenend by the weight of the night sky, the speckling stars, the moon, the endless expanse, and your eternity bereft.

    Loss is an ache, a mounting pressure and shearing force that twists and tears and mangles.
    It is the ripping and gouging, the suffocation, laceration, and dissolution of your core.
    It is the arrest of fortitude, a fragility.
    It is a sharp, piercing, yet silent shattering that forces your knees to the ground.
    That drags your fists to your chest and crooks your back until you’re cowering, bowing in deference to the pain.
