Hi, I’m Michael Celender, a Johannesburg-based screenwriter, consultant and indie producer who fell in love with movies after catching Indiana Jones in the late eighties. Born and raised in South Africa, I’ve also lived in Los Angeles and Tel Aviv. I’ve written three features (including an adaptation) and four shorts, with scripts placing in local and international screenwriting contests, and I produced my first short in 2023.
I was mentored early on by veteran SA writer-producer Chris Dresser, studied the craft with Syd Field and Blake Snyder, and sought inspiration from seminars in LA with industry professionals like Eric Sherman. My screenwriting and filmmaking highlights include promoting Israeli film projects in 2016, securing an NFVF development grant for Affirmative Action, and adapting He Died Alone in Tijuana into Crossing Borders, which earned praise from an Emmy-winning screenwriter and reached semi-finalist status at WeScreenplay in 2019. In 2023 I shot Eloise in Durban and I’m developing The Maccabee, Eloise, and Umbono/Premonition, with a KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission production grant supporting Eloise’s post-production.
