Currently working in the film and tech industries in what has become a very complicated web for my accountant; as a self-employed freelancer, a permanently employed editor, and as director of an independent production company. As a writer/director I’ve been walking that stereotypical artsy road to making my own films and helping as many other people as I can along the journey in whatever way I can, with some success (two editing awards, and a BIFA-qualifying music video.) However over the last few years I’ve taken a more dedicated detour into my editing career, which is apparently what I’m best at, and since I enjoy editing so much I’m happy to see where that path leads. I have an in-depth understanding of, and capability in, every area of production from pre to post, with the added benefit that all this time sat behind a screen somehow hasn’t robbed me of my natural charm and ability to interact with people like a well-adjusted human being.

Work Experience

Senior Editor at IOG
July 1, 2021 - Present
After beginning as a freelancer I was asked to join the team on a permanent basis as the company's primary video editor. The majority of my time was spent working on a monthly video podcast, which included helping people from all over the globe record remote interviews and then cutting those interviews together for wider release as well as extracting highlights clips for social media use. I also traveled internationally to assist with on-site video edits with overnight turnarounds for live events. As the company's strategy shifted I worked on more traditional interview and live event edits as well as increasingly more projects incorporating motion graphics and social-media oriented content. There was a strict legal review policy here which required careful scheduling to ensure things were reviewed on time, and I also pride myself that under my watch no deadlines were ever missed, even when last minute changes were requested that meant working right up to the eleventh hour. Lead editor for an independent corporate production company, started off handling around 50% of the editing workload, increasing to about 90% by the end of my tenure as well as my role expanding to include handling licensing for music, responsibility for footage organisation/backup, liaising directly with clients for their films, and running the non-financial aspects of the business when the CEO was absent. I also began teaching Premiere Pro to other staff members and coordinating workloads for team members when a job required multiple skill-sets (for example incorporating motion graphics). Clients I worked with here include Caterpillar, Perkins Engines, Nationwide Produce, J.O. Sims, Mecc Alte, Chartwells, Clarity4D, NHS CAHMS and The Savoy Hotel.

Company Director as well as working in on-set and post-production roles, including Writer, Producer, Director, Director of Photography, Editor and VFX Artist across a range of short films, and one feature, as well as a television pilot that had close to a hundred cast and crew members involved. Prior to becoming a registered company I was the sole Producer/Director meaning that the vast majority of the workload was organised and coordinated by myself, interacting with every crew member at all levels and supervising each department directly, giving a strong foundational knowledge of all aspects of production. Since gaining a dedicated additional Producer my attention has been more focused on storytelling and directing, but I remain heavily involved in the technical side of production as well in close conference with my HoDs. Our films have screened at a variety of festivals and been nominated for several awards, and actually won two for Best Editing, so that’s nice.

Self-employed as a Sole Trader working mostly within the corporate sector producing shortform content for businesses including McVities, JLR, ChildLine, West End Stage, and the UK Foreign Office. Often jobs require combined Director/DoP roles as well as editing. Music videos are also a focus of AJF working primarily as a DoP for independent artists in collaboration with other companies. Jobs are often public and client-facing requiring strong interpersonal skills and a light touch when interacting with people unfamiliar with film work. Prior to officially registering self-employed I was doing basically the same thing from June 2015, but with an unfortunate emphasis on the ‘free’ part of ‘freelance’.
