A man identified as Abdur Rahman has been accused of allegedly defrauding Islamic scholars (Alems) of approximately Tk 12 crore by posing as a trusted religious figure. According to victims, the accused had been carrying out the fraudulent activities since 2022, exploiting the trust and faith of religious communities. Sources claim that Abdur Rahman introduced himself as an influential Islamic scholar and built close relationships with many Alems from different areas. He reportedly convinced them to invest money in various profitable ventures, promising high financial returns and religiously beneficial opportunities. In some cases, he allegedly sought loans, assuring victims that the money would be returned within a short period. However, after collecting large amounts of money, the accused reportedly failed to repay the victims and gradually became unreachable. Several victims stated that they suffered severe financial losses and emotional distress after realizing they had been deceived. One victim, requesting anonymity, said, “We trusted him because he presented himself as a religious scholar. We never imagined that someone using religion could commit such deception.” The victims claim that the fraud has affected many Islamic scholars and their families, leaving them in financial hardship. They allege that repeated attempts to recover the money through personal communication have failed. As frustration grows, the victims are now seeking urgent intervention from the administration and law enforcement agencies. They have appealed to the authorities to conduct a proper investigation and take legal action against the accused to ensure justice. Local residents have also expressed concern over the incident, urging people to remain cautious and verify financial matters carefully, regardless of personal or religious identity.
