Hi, I’m Sally Whitham-Shaw, a freelance media composer. I grew up in Sheffield and studied composition at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. While a student I wrote incidental music for the Manchester Youth Theatre, worked with a Manchester company making radio jingles, and sang with a post-punk band. After college I taught classroom music in a variety of secondary schools for ten years, served as an examiner for MEG GCSE, and scored music for corporate videos, while running community choral projects and singing with an indie band in clubs and pubs.
In 1996 I moved to France with my husband, Peter, where I co-owned La Tortue, offering fully catered holidays, and later SARL La Véronique from 2010-2016. I formed and directed La Chorale Internationale de Capestang from 2004 to 2018. After Peter’s untimely death I returned to England in 2019 to follow my passion for composing. Since 2020 I have studied sound engineering with Mastering.com and I continue to study to keep up to date with changes and trends, with SYNC mentorship from Jack Chown of Thought Collective. I am a freelance composer currently working on an hour-long children’s animation film for a LA-based company, recently won a scoring competition with The Cue Tube (recording by the Northern Film Orchestra’s string quartet), and am working with Shooting Creatives on a drama/dance film based in Manchester in the 1980s. I pitch to briefs, have had pieces accepted into libraries, and love collaborating with others; my greatest love is writing bespoke music for film and video. I now have a growing library of music from over 40 artists and act as music supervisor and editor when appropriate.
