With a voice often compared to James Earl Jones, I have narrated several books and remain an accomplished writer, poet, and educator whose work explores memory, race, and culture through fiction, poetry, and oral history. My research and creative projects include an oral history on Emmett Till and the Force of American Memory, in a career spent teaching and writing across colleges and universities, and publishing initiatives that span books for adults and children.
I have lectured and collaborated internationally, including as a Visiting Professor in China and as an ambassador for cross-cultural educational exchange. My books include 10 Stories Down, a collection of poetry, and children’s literature, such as Grandma Found a Gecko, an early reader. I have been honored with recognitions in such prestigious sites as Rochester, New York’s Poet’s Walk, the United Nation’s and various grants and fellowships.
