This is a film edits page on Instagram that I run where I create edits of my favourite films to music I think fits them. Aside from being a fun recreational project, I find it has developed my sense of pacing and rhythm in my editing, as well as furthering my fascination with the use of music in films. I often hear a piece of music and I can envision exactly the kind of scene it could be used in. As such, I’ve taken a particular interest in the art of music supervision in film.
This is a project I edited as part of a “production day” at my university’s film club, where we were given a day to conceptualise, shoot and edit a spoof music video for an already existing song. My group decided to do one for Silk Sonic’s “Leave the Door Open” centring around a little rock guy who falls in love with a girl. It’s a pretty goofy and fun concept, so I tried to reflect that tone in the edit. As I enjoy editing to music anyways, cutting to the beat and maintaining the flow of the song was something that came naturally.
Credit to the director and the team on set, as I had a lot of footage to play with. Some of it is part of a flash forward, and so the challenge was how to incorporate that flash forward and manage the timeline for the audience. My first version actually had everything play out in flashback and then return to the present of the rock being sad about his lost love, but my director rightly pointed out that it could be more impactful if we flashed forward around the middle, and then back again so that the girl’s betrayal came at the very end. This was a great bit of feedback which made the final edit much better, and it taught me to always listen to feedback without judgment or bias.
The time constraint of only having about half a day to complete the edit was challenging, but ultimately rewarding and improved my edit speed and work ethic immensely!
This is a student short film I worked on for a class at university. I took on a few roles, including DIT, sound mixer, and assistant camera. Since it was a collaborative group project with my classmates, we each took a few roles in this way, and each of us had a say in the creative decisions that were made. The film is an atmosphere short about a girl who dreams each night that she has her entire college campus to herself, all alone. This is until she encounters another boy, and the two learn to enjoy each other’s company in this dream space. The film has a meditative sense of melancholy, which is something our writer and director set in motion and which we all worked to make happen.
“Synergy” is a short film that I edited for my university’s film club ETV. It’s a spoof mockumentary following a business student’s attempt to better market a struggling film club, only for her entrepreneurial thinking to clash with the club’s insistence on artistry. Since most of the comedy came from the awkward and embarrassing situations the characters find themselves in, I emphasised periods of silence in my edit, as well as carefully deciding when to cut for maximum comedic effect. The documentary-esque style of the film also familiarised me more with conventions of documentary filmmaking like how to integrate talking head footage, and some scenes also developed my skills in multi-cam editing and cutting between different angles/viewpoints.
