Alex Wucherer lives near Zurich and works as an illustrator, animator, graphic designer and art director. He studied communication design and has also been teaching for several years, currently at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences for conceptual illustration and visual rhetoric. His penchant for illustration was already apparent during his studies, when he worked for an indie comic publisher and as a background artist for an animated cinema film. Alex enjoys using different techniques and also works with screen printing, graphic recording and photography. His digital illustrations and 2D animations are mainly created in Procreate and the Adobe Creative Suite. He also uses programmes such as Callipeg, Sketch and Freeform. He works analogue with ink and pencil, occasionally also in acrylic, scratchboard or lino cut. In his projects, Alex approaches the visual form through the content. His motifs often focus on people and their inner selves: "In my illustrations I try to create a certain atmosphere and tension with simple strokes and with the help of metaphors, slightly surreal elements and an analogue touch, where the viewer closes the gap themselves!" The versatile artist is adept at developing the right illustration style and visual language for each client, as he has done for clients such as the City of Zurich, Fairmed, Meteomatics, the University of Zurich and karla magazine for local journalism, whose new look won a DDC award in 2023 for its transformative communication design. "A small favourite is an illustration for the Grafikmagazin, which was about ethics in artificial intelligence. My approach here was the methodology of AI, which uses existing databases and uses questionable means to regenerate the wheel, but does not reinvent it." Alex Wucherer is also in demand as an art director and concept developer. For example, he created the concept and realisation for a cinema trailer and corresponding accompanying media such as invitations and posters for the Zurich Film Prize.
