    Kim Ono Jest?

The Wabi Sabi kimono project draws inspiration from the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection, simplicity, and natural authenticity. This concept celebrates the unique character of each element, using a minimalist aesthetic that is both timeless and versatile. Inspired by Japanese botanical watercolors, the design process emphasizes simplicity, with the kimono’s layered construction reflecting the Japanese approach to capturing an essence in just a few brushstrokes.

The kimono itself is designed as a “transformative” garment, combining elements of a blouse, vest, and skirt, allowing it to be mixed and matched, adapted, and styled in numerous ways. It consists of two reversible layers: one side is minimalist and white, like a blank canvas, while the other features harmoniously natural colors, accented with botanical watercolor-style appliqués. Each component—vest, sleeves, and skirt—is tied with sashes that can be styled dynamically, embodying the spirit of wabi-sabi adaptability.

Crafted from natural materials, the white layer is made from recycled cotton and the multicolor layer from linen, with satin ties to contrast the textures. The kimono encourages versatility, providing endless styling possibilities for women seeking freedom and self-expression in fashion. Designed for flexibility, it can be modified with different materials, colors, and decorative elements, evolving alongside the woman who wears it.

This project was realized with the support of LPP and ASP Gdansk as part of the Fashion Starter 2024 program.
